Top Ten Tuesday at Many Little Blessings

I’m headed to the 2:1 Conference this weekend thanks to many wonderful sponsors. Here’s a few things to know about me before the conference…

  1. I’m on the short side. I’m only 5’5″ so Jennifer Janes is going to tower above me.
  2. I deal with depression. I even wrote an ebook on depression called Finding Joy in Depression. {Want to write a review or do a giveaway? Contact me to get a review copy.}
  3. I have a BA Bible and an MA in Old Testament Studies.
  4. I’ve dabbled in 5 languages. I know French, Hebrew, Greek, some Aramaic, plus English. I even started to learn Syriac at one point. I don’t regularly use most of my foreign languages any more, but bits and pieces are still rattling around in my head. And English, we’ll I’ll let you be the judge on that one.
  5. I’m a geek. I like the technical and organizational aspects of blogging. I even offer monthly maintenance and other technical services to other bloggers. Again. Geek.
  6. I wear glasses and I can’t stand the thought of getting contacts. Not going to happen. Ever.
  7. I’m riding in a van on Friday for 7+ hours to get to 2:1 with my husband, my 5 year old Jonathan, and my 1 year old Jacob. And Kela is hitching a ride with us. Pray that Kela and I survive. If we have an odd glazed over look, you’ll know that Jonathan talked our ears off for the whole trip.
  8. I don’t get out of the house much because we only have one car. If Josh can’t ride his motorcycle to work for some reason, and often at last minute notice, then I don’t have  vehicle.
  9. I giggle and talk way to fast when I get nervous.
  10. I’m borderline introvert/extrovert anytime I’ve ever taken a personality type test, but I do get overwhelmed in large crowds and I don’t even care to go to places like the grocery store alone. I like to have a buddy. Who is going to be my buddy?

There you go. 10 Things about me for those attending the 2:1 Conference this weekend.

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

Linked with The Homeschool Chick

Holiday weekends are nice, but they always throw things off a little bit.  We lose our routine.  Sometimes people get cranky after having extra daddy time because we miss him when he has to go back to work.  Including the mommy.

In our homeschool this week?
We’re in our summer “break” now.  We’re focusing on math, language arts, and lots of free reading.

Places we?re going and people we?re seeing?
We’re counting down to our trip to California next week.  Josh’s sister Corrie is getting married in one week from today!

My favorite thing this week was?
I love listening to Jonathan read.  This stack is some of the books that he has read in the last week. His favorite books have been Frog and Toad.

What?s not working for us?
We scrapped the rest of the Sonlight Readers 1 I Can Read It Book 2 and all of Book 3.  Jonathan was bored with the stories and the reading level was too low.  Book 1 help build some confidence and reading speed, but by the time we started Book 2, he wanted something with more of a story line.  I also scrapped a lot of the activities in Sonlight LA 1.  Some he’s just not ready for and some he just plain does like to do.

What?s working for us?
We moved on to the rest of the books in Sonlight Readers 1.  I’ve been using the activity sheets in Sonlight LA 1 and modifying them as needed.  Jonathan seems to understand the grammar concepts that have been introduced because he points things out in other books that he is reading.  He got excited when he saw uppercase emphasis and a series in one of the Frog and Toad books.

I?m reading?

  • The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson with GoodMorningGirls.org.  We’re reading about the gift of faith this week.
  • Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson.  This book is amazing.  It is a wealth of information.  Last weekend, I decided that it would be helpful to process this book with other moms, so I started planning for a discussion group on the book.  It begins July 18 and I’d love to have you join me!

Educating the Wholehearted Discussion Schedule

EWC Discussion Schedule

This schedule is subject to change.

I have exciting news that I’ve been dying to share for a couple of days…

I’m going to be writing about homeschooling related topics over at The Homeschool Classroom!  You’ll find me over there monthly starting in August.  Hope you’ll check it out.

As I was reading through the first chapter of Educating the Wholehearted Child this afternoon, an idea struck me. There are so many wonderful scripture references and such great content in this book – and I’m only in chapter 1. I’d love to process this information with other homeschool moms. I’d love to hear what others think and how they are implementing the wholehearted approach in their homes.

If there is sufficient interest, I’ll put together a reading and discussion schedule as well as supplemental materials such as SOAP Bible study sheets.

What do you think? Want to join in a discussion of this book? Would you be willing to host a week (here or on your own blog)?
