Review: Pursuit of Proverbs 31

Pursuit of Proverbs 31

I met Amy Bayliss this past fall through her Grace for the Good Girl book club.  I’m currently a part of her Mom’s Money Saving Budget book club.  I’m excited to share with you that Amy has released a new ebook:  Pursuit of Proverbs 31.

Oh, Proverbs 31 woman.  The ultimate example of a Christian woman.  Perfect.  Unattainable.  But is our view of her wrong?

Let me tell you, this not some flimsy, fluffy, little book.  This is over 140 pages and 10 chapters of seriously meaty Bible study on Proverbs 31.  Each chapter has a reading on an aspect of the Proverbs 31 woman showing how she isn’t as perfect as she seems.  She’s really just like us.  The chapters end with a focused thought, a scripture to memorize, and three sections of further study to complete as you are able.

Christin at Joyful Mothering is hosting a book club which starts March 5.  It will include insights from Christin and exclusive videos from Amy.  Buy your copy of the Pursuit of Proverbs 31 and join me for the book club.

Book Review and Giveaway: I Used to Know That Geography

Here’s another great book for your reference library: I Used to Know That Geography

It begins with a review of the planet basics like:

  • Latitude and longitude
  • Climate
  • Basic composition of the earth

The next chapter is about oceans and then there is one chapter for each of the continents.  Each chapter gives information such as:

  • List of nations with capitals, size, and population
  • Historical facts
  • Terrain and climate facts
  • Cultural tidbits

This is great reference book like the grammar books that I previously reviewed from Reader’s Digest.  It would be a great companion to any curriculum.

Book Review: Grumble Hallelujah

Grumble Hallelujah Cover

Grumble Hallelujah Cover

This is my first book review for Tyndale House Publishers.  Honestly, when I was looking at the available books, I didn’t recognize any of the authors and I almost waited to choose my first book until I saw something I was more interested in.  But God had other plans.

I narrowed my choice to two of the three available books.  I love to read and decided, why not try one of them.  I almost chose one, but last minute went for the other.  The other being Grumble Hallelujah by Caryn Dahlstrand Revadeneira.   I fully expected some tiny little book with a bunch of fluff and I was a little disappointed went it arrived at 256 pages.  Yikes.  I have to read this whole book?

I sat down and started reading.  Let me just say that my expectations and initial observations were quickly turned upside down and ripped apart.

Caryn’s story is universal in so many respects.  She speaks openly about things that most moms and most women, and honestly most Christians, don’t want to admit.  This book is not fluff.  This book is filled with raw emotion, raw observations, and real Truth.  Yes, Truth with a capital T.

We all face difficult things in our lives to varying degrees.  We all have expectations.  Sometimes our lives live up to those expectations and well, sometimes they don’t.  How do we respond when life doesn’t go the way that we think that it should?  In the five sections of her book, Caryn gives a suggested path.  Through humor, life experiences, and scripture, Caryn shows that we can and should say hallelujah in the midst of our circumstances – even if we can only grumble it at first under our breath.

My favorite part of the book was the section on grief.  That’s the section that really hit me between the eyes.  Many circles of Christ-followers down play grief, especially overly emotional grief.  As strong believers or strong women, the norm is that we shouldn’t cry over losses.  But that’s not the way that God created us.  From the obvious loss of loved ones to the loss of what could have or should have been in our lives, God created us to grieve.  Grieving is a God created response that cleanses us and allow us to move on with our lives.  Thank you Caryn for exposing this.

An interesting connection for me in the book is when Caryn describes an encounter with what may have been an angel in, of all places, my hometown of St. Joseph, MI.  Crazy.  Funny thing is that I remember hearing stories of people encountering angels in the area 20-30 years ago when I was growing up there.  Seriously.  I don’t remember details, but I remember hearing stories.

Mom, wife, woman.  Stop trying to hold it all together and act as if things are always ok.  They’re not.  Grumble Hallelujah and see what truly seeking after God has to offer.

This book gets 5 stars from me!

Let me leave you with an interview with Caryn:

Book Review: 31 Days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo

31 Days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo

Are you a blogger?  Then today’s post is for you.

31 Days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo

I was given the opportunity to review 31 Days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo by Bryan Allain.  I’m always looking for ways to improve my blog and my writing so I jumped at the chance to read and review this ebook.

First, I have to tell you that this book is hilarious.  I was not prepared for how funny it would be.  Seriously.  Bryan is fall over, side-splitting funny.  There are even jokes taken from Bryan’s blog that serve as a bridge between the chapters.

What’s blogging mojo?  Why do I want it?  I think that this quote from day one answers those questions and sums up the entire book very well:

Blogging Mojo is writing about things you are passionate about for people who share your passion. It’s creating conversation and community around the exchange of honest thoughts and questions. It’s being “the real you” online to a group of people that resonate with the things that move you. – Day 1

The ebook is set up in 31 readings.  Each reading has a “mojo action” to help you find or refine what you’re passionate about, improve your writing. and engage your audience.  These actions are practical steps and small activities that will make you look at your blog and your writing with a new perspective.  You could read the book daily for a month or take a weekend retreat to focus on your blogging.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  It only took me a couple hours to read through the whole book.  The amount of information crammed into these pages in phenomenal.  Bryan’s humor makes it so easy to read what could otherwise be a dry and boring subject.  I’m planning to go back through this book very soon and doing all the “mojo action” steps.

31 Days to Finding Your Blogging Mojo is available as a PDF and on Kindle.  Go get your copy today!
