Jonathan Floating a Coracle

This is Jonathan floating a coracle in my bathroom sink.

We made this circle boat from the The Usborne book of Living Long Ago (see pg. 75), which is a part of our Sonlight Core A curriculum.  Jonathan and I made it together during the day out of pipe cleaner, a plastic grocery bag, and packaging tape.  Before bed, Daddy and Jonathan testing out the boat in the bathroom sink.

Take a look at what happened to poor pipe cleaner man:

Poor, poor pipe cleaner man.  I think his drowning was worth the fun and learning about ancient boats called coracles.  What do you think?  It was also a great way to include Dad in our homeschooling.

Kids in the Word Wednesday ~ August 31

This week, we memorized Psalm 34:10 using Seeds Family Worship Volume 1 Seeds of Courage.  Using the printable from BibleStoryPrintables.com, Jonathan colored, traced, and copyworked his way to memorizing this verse.

We started Kindergarten on August 22 which means we jumped into Sonlight Core A with both feet and started Apologia’s Who is God? worldview book.

The Bible for Core A is Egermeier’s Bible Story Book but I’m not following the schedule exactly.  Because I’m attempting to stretch Core A to between 1.5 and 2 years, we are reading just one story per day.  Jonathan enjoys the stories as told from this Bible.  We have read creation through Noah’s Ark.  He also likes putting the timeline figures into our Book of Time.  This week we put Adam and Eve as well as Noah and his Ark into our timeline.

{It is important to note that this “Bible” is not a translation or even a paraphrase.  It is a children’s story Bible.  Some liberties are taken in the telling of the stories to make them accessible to children.  I don’t feel like these have been excessive or to the point of “twaddle” – to use a Charlotte Mason term.  I also trust the publisher, Warner Press.  Warner Press is owned and operated by the Church of God Anderson and I am a graduate of Anderson University.}

2011-08 Building with Blocks

Using Who is God?, we talked about building good foundations, building on rock versus sand, and how God is our Rock.  Jonathan has spontaneously built things with blocks and used the word foundation in his every day conversations.  We also talked about wisdom and how using wisdom which comes from God and the Bible helps us make good decisions.  I heard him playing with trucks one afternoon and using the word wisdom.  The matchbox trucks were inside a block fence and one left without asking.  Apparently, that truck didn’t use wisdom and made a bad choice by going out without permission.  {This came the day after Jonathan did the same thing by going outside to ride his bike without telling me that he was going out.}

So far, I think that the notebook for Who is God? is too much for Jonathan.  He doesn’t really like to color, but I’ve been sitting with him to color in the Who is God? coloring book as we talked about we read in the textbook.  I was very excited about starting Who is God? and it has not disappointed me.  Jonathan seems to be grasping the concepts and enjoying it too.

It’s your turn!  How have you kept your kids in the Word this week?  {See guidelines here.}
