We're using a new spelling program this year that I'm really excited about. After struggling to find a good rhythm for a couple of years with Spell to Write & Read, we've switched to All About Spelling from All About Learning Press. Even though Jonathan could have jumped into Level 2, we decided to start with Level 1 to introduce him to the format and make sure we didn't miss anything important.
10 Wonderful Things: All About Spelling
- The letter tiles are tough. Jacob has gotten a hold of them several times and hasn't been able to destroy on yet. We're keeping ours on a small cookie sheet for now, but we plan to graduate to a larger white board at some point.
- There's just enough of a script to help you teach without driving your crazy. I'm not a fan over overly scripted teacher's guides.
- The bag in the interactive kit is cute and sturdy. It's perfect for keeping all your supplies together.
- The spelling words are on card stock. This makes it easy to review words and there's a sturdy box to store all the various cards in as you accumulate more in later levels.
- There's a chart to keep track of progress through the level. Jonathan likes coloring in the lessons as if finishes one. He's so excited that we've crossed the half way mark!
- It's easy to follow and progress through the lessons. I felt like I was winging it too much with SWR and I was getting frustrated that it felt like we weren't moving forward.
- All About Spelling is easily tailored to your child with learning suggestions. Move faster or slower. Spell out loud, with tiles, or get full on kinesthetic with spelling. Whatever is best for your child.
- It can be used again for future kids. Reusability is important to me when purchasing curriculum. It saves money in the long run.
- There are 7 levels. This program can take you through elementary and into middle school.
- Your child doesn't need to have all the phonograms mastered to get started. SWR wants children to have all the phonograms committed to memory before starting the spelling lists. All About Spelling allows kids to get started with the basics and then adds the complex phonograms on at an appropriate times in each level.
All About Learning Press has some freebies to available too that you won't want to miss:
