Jonathan and I have been using Saxon Math K for a few months now. Most of our math has been games, real life counting, and observation. Then we usually have one more formal math lesson each week in Saxon Math K. We can fly through 2-4 math lessons in a very short period of time. Jonathan seems happy with it, but the Saxon teacher's manual is driving me crazy! I don't like that the teaching is to wordy and scripted. So, I'm considering a change…
I'm looking at Math Mammoth. The teaching material is in line with the student worksheets and is designed to be simple and straight forward for the teacher. We did a little bit of the Blue Series Clock book that I got for free through The Homeschool Buyer's Coop on Thursday. Today we used some of the sample sheets from the Light Blue Series Grade 1 book.
After just a few worksheets, I really like it. Much better format for me as the teacher and still works well for Jonathan as the student. A couple additional benefits are that it is cheaper than Saxon Math and because it is a PDF download, I can easily reprint pages for Jonathan and use it again for Jacob in a few years. I'm thinking about getting the Blue Series Addition 1 book and easing into the Light Blue Series Grade 1 book over the next year at whatever pace Jonathan wants.
