This is day 24 of 31 Days of Finding Joy in Depression. Yesterday, I shared about exercise and depression. Today, I'm talking about grief and depression.
Grief. It's an ugly topic that most people don't want to deal with. Most people associate grief with death, but it is more than that. There are all kinds of things in our lives that need to be grieved.
It seems like as Christ-followers, we think that we shouldn't grieve. The reality? Even God grieves. Look at God's reactions to the world before the flood and King Saul's turn away from Him. God grieved. Jesus at the loss of His friend Lazarus? He grieved.
When we hold in grief and refused to mourn, we allow ourselves to sink further into depression. Unresolved rief and depression go hand and hand down into the low spots.
Grieving, shedding tears, emptying ourselves of hurt seems to clear up room for God to work. pg. 9 of Grumble Hallelujah
I read and reviewed Grumble Hallelujah last month. Through that book, God taught me so much about letting go and learning to grieve. This even means grieving over the way something could have been or should have been. Grieve your losses and your what-ifs as they come and move on. God doesn't want us to live in that, but for whatever reason He does want us to walk through it.
Do you have something that you need to grive over? How does holding something in and not grieving affect your depression?

I'm linking up with The Nester and others who are writing 31 posts this month on various topics. I'm not a doctor or a counselor and this is not intended to be medical advice. This is simply the story of my experience with depression.
