Isn't it amazing how the Bible all connects?  How reading one verse can bring remembrance of another?

In  1 John 3:1-10, John is talking about practicing righteousness.  Righteousness is

acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin

God has made us free from guilt and sin.  But how do we practice this?  Two ways:

  1. Love God.
  2. Love Your Brother.

Hmmm.  Sound familiar?

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:37-40

The greatest commandment.  That's how we practice righteousness.
