I'm reading Habakkuk during the Good Morning Girls break. Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing thoughts and reflections from Habakkuk. I won't be hitting everything in the book, but sharing bits and pieces that stick out to me as I read, just like I did for 1 John.
I'm using the same SOAP format for my study. I've found that I really like using this method. I have my NASB Bible, colored pencils, and my simple composition notebook. I'm using YouVersion Bible app and Logos Bible app on my iPad and iPhone as well as Logos on my Mac to compare Bible translations, read commentaries, and look into the Hebrew words.
Let's dive in with a little background and what to expect in Habakkuk!
The author is the prophet Habakkuk, who we know pretty much nothing about. The book was written shortly before the fall of Judah, which occurred in 586 B.C. The book is a conversation between the prophet and God.
The theme verse is:
Behold, as for the proud one,
His soul is not right within him;
But the righteous will live by his faith.
Habakkuk 2:4 NASB
Some words to look for:
- God, Lord, and pronouns referring to Him.
- righteous
- faith
- mercy
- words referring to sin
- salvation
- rejoice
You'll be surprised to find how many times names, titles, and pronouns are used to refer to God in this book. These three pages in my Bible have so much yellow colored pencil that the pages practically glow!
The main problem addressed in the book is this: How can God use a wicked nation like Babylon to accomplish His purposes? Journey with me as I discover how Habakkuk deals with this “problem” and how it can change our perspective on how God works in our lives.
Have you ever read Habakkuk? Any thoughts you'd like to share on the book as a whole? Leave a comment!
Oh, and when Good Morning Girls groups resume on January 15, I'm leading a group on Ephesians. You can join me and some of my friends and favorite bloggers/tweeters.
