Your kid, and every kid, is extraordinary. Celebrate your extraordinary kid. We need to celebrate each of our kids and the little things that do.
Today, I'm celebrating Jacob. Jacob is 3.5 years old… or almost 4 if you ask him how old he is. He knows that his birthday is the next one to come in our immediate family. The way he talks about it, you'd think that birthday is next week. In reality, it's still almost four months away.
Teaching my boys to read has been one of the biggest joys for me as a mom. When we were thinking about homeschooling, the thought of teaching my kids to read terrified me. That and higher level math. Choosing to homeschool, I knew I'd have to get over this fear and just jump in. After teaching Jonathan to read, teaching reading has become one of my favorite parts of homeschooling.
About a month ago, Jacob was ready to start reading. In the last month he has taken off like a little rocket. He devours the words!
Jacob has a strong and crazy funny personality. That personality has come through as I've taught him to read. When he learned the phonogram “th” and the word “thud”, every word became “thud” for a while because he thought the word was so funny. He just loves to get laughs.
What makes your kid extraordinary isn't just the epic stuff. It's the little things. The small moments that maybe only you see –and quietly celebrate every day. These little things are the things I want to remember.
I made this video to help me remember this special time in Jacob's life… and the silly faces that he makes. Take a look:
