The Pelsers

A Shelter for the Heart

A Name for Our Homeschool

We finally decided on a name for our homeschool!

In North Carolina, we don't officially have to name our school until we register our homeschool with the state and we have two more years before we are required to register.  I wanted to decide on a name now so it feels more official for Jonathan starting Kindergarten and so I have a name when registering for various programs and websites.

Here were my requirements for coming up with a name:

  • Unique
  • Meaningful
  • Transcript appropriate
  • Follow North Carolina guidelines

And the winner is…

Havenhart Academy

We brainstormed many, many words about homeschooling, our reasons for homeschooling, what we want to accomplish in our homeschool and much more.  We used a thesaurus and Google Translate.  Being an Old Testament lover, I wanted something Hebrew, but it just didn't work.  I did some searches online for our finalists to see how unique they were.  And finally, we asked Jonathan to help us choose from the finalists.

Here is how we came to this name:

  • Haven – This is another word for family, home, or shelter.  We want our homeschool to be a nurturing and safe place to learn and grow.
  • Hart – This is the Dutch word for heart.  Since Pelser is Dutch, we thought it would be nice to incorporate that part of children's heritage.  Heart is also a word often used for the core or the center of who we are.  We want our kids to develop a strong foundation at the core of who they are so they won't be shaken when tough times come and we want them to wholeheartedly pursue God.  Homeschooling is about more than an academic education; it's about educating the whole person.
  • Academy – This is a popular choice for homeschools.  We didn't like the sound of the word school, so we went with academy.

What do you think?  It has a Bravehart-esque ring to it, doesn't it?
