The Pelsers

A Shelter for the Heart

By Mandy Kelly

Teenagers and Witchcraft

This post may contain affiliate links. Please read my full disclosure statement here.

Recently, my daughter came home and asked me about Voodoo and Ouija boards. She is 14, and goes to public middle school. There was a new “game” that had come out called “Charlie Charlie” and she wanted to know if it was real or not. It took everything in me to not drop my jaw. I just began to pray that God would speak through me.

Help keep your teenager guarded from witchcraft

Some teenagers would say these games are just that – games. They knock the board, or the pencil (in this new game Charlie Charlie) and get the answer. It freaks out the person who isn't paying attention. Is it all just harmless fun?

Witchcraft has been around for a long time. Since early ages, there have been people who have been calling on magic and demons in order to “fix” their problems. Even in the time of Jesus, people thought HE was working for the devil because of the miracles He was able to perform.

The truth about these “games” is that they are nothing to play with. Satan can take any teenager's “fun” and turn it into something for darkness. Something that will make these children walk away from light – from the Light of Jesus Christ.

We need to teach our children to guard their minds from these things. I know these are not topics that we want to talk about with our kids, but it is so necessary. Even if they are homeschooled they will face this sometime. Don't think that they won't meet someone at youth camp, college, or even as an adult, who believes in these kinds of magic.

The main verse I use to talk to my children about these things is 1 Thessalonians 5:22:

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

We need to stay away from evil. Even if you don't think it is evil – if it looks evil – stay away. This has helped my kids in so many different areas of life, and it was great to be able to remind my daughter of this truth tonight. Evil is evil and if it looks like evil, it probably has evil in it.

This post isn't meant to breed legalism – but to spark awareness. Get into the lives of your children. Ask them pointed questions about their day. Make sure they know that they can have open communication with you and let them know this won't cause you shock. You need to try to keep the shock factor down so that your kids know they can talk about these things with you.

If you don't have advice from the Word, take some time and pray about it and dig in deep and then go back to your child with the ammunition from God's Word that they need in order to stand when the fiery darts come at them.

Satan wants to steal, kill, and destroy our kids – be sure to stand guard over yours!

About Mandy Kelly

In Loving Memory of Mandy Kelly.
Mandy, her husband, and two of their children passed away in a home fire on March 21, 2017. Read more from Mandy at Worshipful Living. Read my reflections on Mandy's life in this post: Life Lessons from Mandy.
Mandy is passionate about two things: The Word of God and the Souls of Men (and Ladies!). She is a married to her best friend, and gets the privilege to love on their three blessings (who lost their biological momma leaving her husband widowed). She loves that the Lord has let her life be an example of delighting in Him and watching Him mold her life to make her desires match His. She spent 9 years in an early childhood classroom, and 4 years in an “in house” seminary program at her home church. She loves to bring God glory through her roles as Christ-follower, Wife and Mother (in that order!) She enjoys women’s ministry, cooking, crafting, and traveling the world. Mandy is also passionate about Adoption and helping women with Infertility- as both are areas God has trusted her with. Her greatest desires are to have her marriage bring God ultimate glory, see her children walk in truth, to lead others to the feet of Jesus, and to lead women into deeper and intimate relationship with their Savior through study of the Word of God.
