Since I began to take care of my own finances as an adult, I've learned over and over again: God seems to operate on His own money math system that I can't quite wrap my mind around…
When it Doesn't Add Up
I've watched the cycle, month after month. The money comes in. The bills come in. The money goes out. Over and over again. It seems like there shouldn't be enough money, but yet, there is. There is just enough. I look at our budget my wonderful You Need a Budget program and I can see all the numbers right there. I'm not a math major by any stretch of the imagination, but it just doesn't seem to add up. How does it all work in the end?
But Josh and I have watched something even bigger change when we became “gazelle intense” to pay off our remaining debt. We don't have any extra money in our regular budget from Josh's income. We have no margin to pay off debt in our budget. Somehow, when it appears that there should be no way, we were able to pay off Josh's student loan this spring. $6,000 in 3.5 months. God provided. Somehow, God is already working a way to bring us very close to our $4,000 goal towards our HELOC. We're on track to come up with another $4,000 in just 4-5 months.
Edited to add: Our goal was highjacked. We had to divert that same amount of money to paying the deductible for our prenatal care, labor, and deliver for baby #3!
What is God's Money Math?
This has absolutely nothing to do with the name-it-to-claim-it theology. This is pure and simple obedience. Tithe, follow God's lead, and He provides. It's not always money that he provides, but He provide for our needs and we are taken care of. It's not about riches, it's about provision. It's not about honor, it's about obedience. It's God's money, not mine.
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:26
