Let me be brutally honest. Emotions are a struggle for me. My depression plays a huge role in that problem. I'm always running a little “lower” (translation: less excited) than most people around me. When things inside are haywire in my hormones and emotions, anxiety and frustration set in… and BOOM. Anger takes over. Yelling comes out. Yeah. It's not pretty.

Brooke McGlothlin recently released an ebook called How to Control Your Emotions. I knew that it would be a helpful book so I stepped up to review it and share my thoughts with you.

{As you can see, I read this book on my iPad. I use the Notability app. I read PDF ebooks in the same way that I set up worksheets for my boys on the iPad. Read the How to Use Worksheets on an iPad tutorial.}

Review of How to Control Your Emotions by Brooke McGlothlin. At ThePelsers.com

How to Control Your Emotions

Anger moved into frustration because sometimes it just feels like nothing ever changes around here. Frustration led to feeling completely overwhelmed by my own inability to change their hearts. And finally, feeling overwhelmed moved to straight hopelessness and a desire to just. give. up. (pg. 6)

I love Brooke's writing. She had me right from the intro with that quote. It's like sitting down and listening to a good friend share her struggles but also sharing how to use the Word of God to deal with those struggles. It's real. It's down to earth. It's practical.

Brooke shares simple heart piercing questions like this one:

Will we choose to believe what the Bible says is true, even when what we see and feel screams something different? (pg. 7)

She goes on to share about the raw honesty of David and what we can learn from how he dealt with his problems and his own sin. The feel, know, do model that Brooke lays out is wonderful. It's so easy to remember; maybe not the biggest hurdle in putting processes in place in our lives, but certainly the first. An easy to remember mantra certainly helps when emotions are involved.

Don't misunderstand me. How to Control Your Emotions isn't a magic formula. It's a call to look at ourselves and our sins. Yeah, our sins. I'm going to mess up. Brooke's encouragement is that we need to compare our feelings to Scripture and find our way back onto the path where God wants us to be.
