My kids are huge fans of Buck Denver and the What's in the Bible? series from Jelly Telly.
The What's in the Bible? series takes your kids cover to cover through the Bible in 13 DVDs. My kids have watched them over and over again. The series makes the Bible and basic theology very accessible for kids.
Galaxy Buck
Now Phil Vischer (also the creator of VeggieTales) has created a spin-off series called Galaxy Buck. This new series has a missions focus. Here's how they describe this first episode, Galaxy Buck: Mission to Sector 9:
“Buck Denver has a simple dream – to save the galaxy. Working for the Galactic Mission Board, Buck dreams of carrying God's love to every corner of the Milky Way!
Except he doesn't have a starship. Or a crew. Or even a captain's license. He just needs a chance.
But when that chance comes and Buck finds himself leading a real mission into deep space, things don't go at ALL like he imagined!
If he's doing what God wants him to do, why is everything going wrong?!”

The team at Jelly Telly sent me a link to watch Galaxy Buck: Mission to Sector 9 online so I could share our thoughts with you. There was serious excitement here at my house on the night I revealed that we had the opportunity to watch the episode before the official release. My family settled in on that Friday evening a few weeks ago for a movie night with Buck Denver.
Our Thoughts on Mission to Sector 9
So what did we think? I honestly found it difficult at first to see the characters from What's in the Bible? in a different setting with different roles, but my kids didn't seem to notice or mind. After I got over that hurdle, we all settled into the new theme and setting and really enjoyed the new episode.
In full disclosure, my second son is a bit of a sensitive one and had trouble at first with the suspense and intensity of the introduction of the “aliens” when Buck and his friends arrive on the new planet. It's not gross or particularly scary, but he's easily upset by situational and literary builds like that. It only lasted a moment and then he was fine. If you have a sensitive child, be ready for that.
Over all, my kids loved it and are already asking about the next one. Galaxy Buck has a great message of taking the Gospel to those who've never heard it… and how you as an individual can be used to do things for God.
Galaxy Buck: Mission to Sector 9 is now available from Jelly Telly. Prefer Amazon? Get it here. It's already on our list to buy for our kids for Christmas.
