In our homeschool this week we…
- completed preschool with Jonathan! We completed our Sonlight P4/5 curriculum this morning and our Pathway Days Go By Workbook yesterday.
- started Sonlight Readers and LA 1. I'm focusing more on reading and comprehension that anything else. Jonathan has already done the first four weeks of reading and will do the fifth later today.
My favorite things this week were…
- Jonathan's conversation with Josh at bedtime last night… Josh saw Jonathan's Bible out on his bed and asked him if he'd been reading it. Jonathan told Josh that he had been looking at it that morning. He said that he was looking at it to learn how to obey Mommy and Daddy. I nearly cried when Josh came to relay the conversation to me.
- hearing Jacob say “Bubba”. That's his word for Jonathan.
- watching Jacob enjoy his first corn tortilla… fed to him by “Bubba”.
- watching Jacob chase “Bubba” around the house… head down, full-speed ahead crawling!
- realizing that Jacob is “paci-free”… he hasn't taken a paci since our trip to California at the end of May.
- full nights of sleep… Yes, Jacob has been sleeping at least 8 hours straight at night, sometimes closer to 10 hours. The earliest he has been waking is around 5 am. I like sleep.
Things I'm working on…
- a passport for our “travels”. We're going to be visiting a lot of places in our reading this year and I wanted a fun place to record them. I'm close to finishing the file and will hopefully post here in the next few days.
- lesson plans for Apologia Astronomy and Who is God?
- incorporating some classical elements into my homeschooling method.
I'm reading…
- The Ministry of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson with GoodMorningGirls.org. We're in chapters 9 and 10 this week.
- The Well-Trained Mind by Susan Wise-Bauer. This is where I'm getting the ideas for incorporating classical elements into my method. I just skimmed the middle and high school sections. I focused on the grammar stage since that is what we're about to enter.
- Educating the Wholehearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson. The media mail wait on this book was torture! I kept seeing tweets and blog posts about this book and was dying to see my copy arrive! It finally came earlier this week. I'm not very far into it, but I feel encouraged again that we've made a good decision and that we're on the right track.
I am inspired by…
- Seeds Family Worship! I've seen reviews of these worship / scripture memory CDs and have held off purchasing them for a long time. I couldn't resist any longer. I downloaded the first album as MP3s from Amazon (paired with a $2 MP3 credit that Amazon put out earlier this week – {smile}). Incredible. That's all I can say. They are not “kiddie” sounding. I love listening to them myself. I can't get the songs out of my head… and that's a good thing. I think I'm going to use this instead of or in addition to the memory plan in our Sonlight instructor guides.
What's next?
- We now begin our “summer session”. For the next 8 weeks or so, our focus is on reading, comprehension, handwriting, and math.
- The current plan is to begin Kindergarten and Sonlight Core A around the end of August or beginning of September.
