10 Things You Can Do to Protect Homeschooling and Parental Rights

Parental Rights Small

We all homeschool for many different reasons, but in the end we all really do it for one reason: Because we as parents feel that homeschooling is best for our children. But, did you know that the right to homeschool your kids is in jeopardy?

There are two current events that you need to be aware of regarding homeschooling and parental rights:

The first thing you need to know about is the Wunderlich family in Germany. The German government has taken legal custody and is working to take physical custody of the Wunderlich kids away from their parents. Why? Because the Wunderlich family homeschools their kids.

The Wunderlich Family is being persecuted because they have chosen to home educate their children, as is their natural, God-given, “a priori” right. Academics and scholars and others, including Dirk Wunderlich himself, have written extensively on this subject, noting that besides being a natural and “a priori” right, home schooling families should also be protected under Germany's own law. German courts and other “authorities” are acting in violation of numerous documents and treaties to which Germany has agreed is legally bound (see http://www.ghec2012.org/Declaration).

Read more about the Wunderlich family at Home Educating Family.

Think this can't happen in the United States? Think again. The HSLDA is constantly fighting cases where homeschooling and parental rights are being overlooked and laws are being ignored.

There is a direct threat to homeschooling and parental rights. That threat is in the form on two treaties waiting on ratification by the US Senate: The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Convention on the Rights of a Disabled Persons. On the surface, these treaties seem innocent, but the wording opens the door for the government to make decisions for your kids instead of you as the parent.

Here are some places to read up on these treaties:
