Creating a Masterpiece Review

My family had the opportunity to meet Sharon Hofer from Creating a Masterpiece at the Teach Them Diligently Convention this year. It was so neat to see kids of all ages working on various projects with her art DVDs at the booth. Jonathan has been interested in learning some formal art, but truthfully, this momma doesn't have art skills. We thought Creating a Masterpiece would be a great way to bring some art classes into our homeschool. Sharon sent us home with the Tropical Clown Fish Colored Pencils DVD to try and tell you about our experience.

Drawing the Tropical Clown Fish

We decided to start by watching the whole DVD through once before we even came near the art supplies. Little boys with short attention spans need to see and hear all of the instructions before diving in. After that, Jonathan did some practice drawing his clown fish on regular paper. He went through the drawing portion of the DVD a few times until he was happy with the way his fish was turning out. We played the DVD in a laptop so he could easily watch, start, and stop the lessons as needed. Since this DVD didn't involve messy materials, that was a good option for us.

Coloring the Tropical Clown Fish

Next, we pulled out the good art paper and the good colored pencils and got to work. Jonathan begged me to join in the fun, so I got to work creating my tropical clown fish too. After drawing our fish, Sharon showed us how to use the colored pencils to make it look like a painting. Layering colored pencils is tiring, but take a look at our final masterpieces:

Our Thoughts?

We really enjoyed Creating a Masterpiece. Jonathan has always been more found of drawing that coloring, so I was a little surprise when he chose the colored pencil DVD for us to review. These lessons were a God-send because it opened Jonathan's eyes to what he could do with colored pencils. Now, he loves to color and usually chooses colored pencils over crayons or markers. He gets quite excited when there are coloring pages in our other subjects.

As a non-art mom, I highly recommend Sharon's Creating a Masterpiece DVDs for your homeschool. Sharon brings the art right into your home. You don't have to worry about your training. You don't have to worry about finding time or transportation to get to a co-op or class. Just go to the art store with the supplies list or order what you need online, and you're ready to jump in. Plus, you can use the DVDs over and over. Sharon isn't teaching a project; she's teaching your child techniques that they can use over and over again in other projects.

Material Disclosure: We received a copy of the Tropical Clown Fish Colored Pencils DVD in exchange for an honest review.
