For now, we are homeschooling year-round. Jonathan thrives on a schedule. It doesn't have to be strict and there can be spontaneous changes, but he needs to have general structure to his day and week. Plus, I believe that at a young age, having large gaps in learning leaves too much potential for loss… use it or lose it, right?
Our summer is conveniently broken into two parts by Josh's sister Corrie's wedding in July.
First part of the summer – now to mid-July
- Sonlight P4/5 – I have this scheduled out so that we should finish July 12, just before we leave for the wedding.
- Pathway 1st Grade Reader Workbook – We should finish this the first week of July.
- Math Mammoth – We're skipping around between addition, place value, time, and money right now. We usually do one worksheet a day but sometime skip a day here and there. We're working towards starting the 1st Grade Light Blue Series in the fall.
Second part of the summer – mid-July to sometime in August or beginning of September when we start Kindergarten
- Sonlight Readers 1 and LA 1 – The first part of this should be a breeze for Jonathan as far as the reading goes. The Language Arts will introduce him to some creative writing. I decided to start this during the summer so we could slow down a bit and reinforce what he has already learned. He loves the Pathway Readers and may fight the change a little, but I have another Pathway 1st Grade Workbook and the whole 2nd Grade series ready and waiting for him when we finish the Sonlight Readers and LA.
- Foreign Language – We've not done much with the Hooked on Phonics French program in a few months. I'm planning to pull that out during this time and see how Jonathan does with it. I have a first words in French book that I think he might like too. The other night I won a free two month trial to Speekee, a Spanish learning website. I'm planning to play with that too and see what he picks up.
- Scripture Memory – We'll continue learning a verse a week and using it for copywork. I'll have to choose the verses since we won't be in a Sonlight Core during this “break”.
- Math Mammoth – We'll continue with addition, place value, time, and money in preparation for the fall. Lots of computer games, hand-on, and play with math and numbers too.
- Fun! – Not that we don't normally have fun, but we have the opportunity to get together with friends who attend daycare or public school more often. Ride bikes. Play in the pool. Run in the backyard. And much more!
Those are our summer homeschooling plans. Do you take a break in the summer or change your routine for homeschooling?
