I gave Jonathan two Apologia science choices for his Kindergarten science curriculum: Astronomy or Zoology 1.
He and I have been talking about Astronomy for a while, but I really thought once he saw the Zoology 1 book about birds and insects that he'd choose that. We have been watching birds in our backyard while we eat breakfast and he has been enjoying figuring out what kinds of birds are visiting us. In the end he surprised me…. He chose Exploring Creation with Astronomy!
We will start this in the fall and use it until we're done. I don't think we will finish it in a year. I'm expecting it to take us 18 months or more depending on the pace that Jonathan wants to go. I've been going through the book and working on lessons plans, activities, and worksheets. I love the format of this series and the Charlotte Mason approach to science. I like the idea of studying one topic for a longer period of time rather than jumping all over and barely scratching the surface of a topic. Jonathan seems to do better when we spend a little more time and build on one thing. Even with our Sonlight curriculum, he seems to prefer reading all of the scheduled readings for a week in a particular book all at once. He doesn't like little chunks.
