What We Believe
The What We Believe series is published by Apologia. There are 4 books in the series:
What We Believe is a worldview series. What does that mean? It teaches a higher level view of Christianity and the Bible. Your kids are going to get a lot of scripture in this series, but the point is to help them learn Biblical ways of thinking and interacting with our world more than to directly study the Bible by book or by story.
There are notebooking journals to go with each book and for the younger kids, there is a coloring book for each book. If you have kids who do better with listening to textbooks, there are also audio books available.
Our Opinion of What We Believe
We had the opportunity to go through the first book in the series, Who is God?, this year. Jonathan would get quite excited on worldview days and want me to keep reading forever. He's not a big fan of coloring but he said that he really liked the coloring book. You can read our full review of Who is God? here.
How to Use What We Believe
For most kids, it's best to spread the What We Believe books out over the course of a whole school year. You could use it 1-3 times a week or whatever schedule fits best for your family. Most of the time, we used it once a week. If you have older kids, especially those in middle school, you might want to speed up a little and do one book per semester so they have a good foundation going into high school.
I think the best approach is to go through the series as a family. Read it aloud to all your kids at once. Let the littles going through the coloring book while the older kids go through the notebooking journal. There is a lot of writing required in the notebooking journal, so your early elementary kids might have to pick and choose a little more or stick with the coloring book.
There are plenty of opportunities to dig deeper into scripture along the way if you chose. Here are some suggestions:
- Copywork
- Memorization
- Stop and study interesting or important sections of scripture
- Stop and dig more into a particular topic
Worldview for the Whole Family and YOU!
Apologia has a collection of worldview resources for the whole family. The What We Believe Series is mostly for 6-14 years olds. If you need something for younger kids, there are Good Morning God and a new book, How Do We Know God Is Really There. For High Schoolers, there's Frank Turek's I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist and the corresponding workbook. We have not used the preschool resources, but my husband and I know Frank Turek and have read his book.
Thanks to Apologia, I'm giving away worldview resources to three of my readers! We split up the giveaway so you can enter to win the level of worldview that you need for your kids. Of course, you can enter all three, but I didn't want you to be stuck with preschool books when you really need high school. Enter to win using the three Rafflecopter forms below.
