Do you memorize Scripture? What about memorizing Scripture with your kids?

Jacob and I made a short video to give you an example of how you can memorize Scripture with little kids. Here are a couple of things to know before watching:

  • Jacob recently turned three.
  • He has been listening to me read Romans for the the last couple of weeks.
  • He has practiced these three verses every day, sometime multiple times a day, for a couple of weeks before shooting this video.

3 Tips for Memorizing Scripture with Little Kids

Here are three tips for memorizing Scripture with little kids:

  1. Repetition is key.
  2. Prompt them along.
  3. Praise them for a job well done.

You will not likely see fruit right away. Be patient. Pouring Scripture into your kids is a life-long process. Some days it takes a little motivation to help them focus their attention. Jacob loves sips of my hot tea. If he is particular spacey or not interested in participating, I'll offer him a drink of my tea to arouse his attention. Then he's with me and happy to repeat the memory verses. As they get older, that's not as needed. Jacob is a little competitive too, so if he hears his older brother reciting, he will often want to do it too!

Those are the 3 most important tips for memorizing scripture with kids.
I like to give my kids verses that apply directly to things in their life that they are dealing with. Depending on their age, explaining to them in words that they understand what the verse is saying, what it means. I also try to give the kids an index card with the written verse on it. Even if they aren’t old enough to read the words, the card is good for reference while beginning to memorize and then later for practicing. For very young kids you could even use picture prompts on cards along with the words.

That was too cute! Thanks for the video! We like to use seeds worship CDs when possible. We usually do lots of repetition and try to post verses around so they see them often. It also reminds us to keep saying it throughout the day. :))
