Homemade tortillas.  Sound intimidating?  I thought they did for the longest time but I've so wanted to learn how to make them.  A couple weeks ago we were getting some groceries at Compare Foods when Josh saw a lady making homemade corn tortillas.  Josh plus store food samples will always mean trouble for me.  He started looking into the prices of tortilla presses and masa and it was all over.

To get started making homemade tortillas, you'll need:

  • A tortilla press.  The one we bought at Compare was cast iron and cost about $20. It is similar to this one.
  • A bag of masa.  Masa was $2/bag a Compare.

I used the recipe on the side of the bag.  Here's my version of it:

2 cups masa
1/4 tbsp salt
1 1/4 cups water

Combine masa and salt in a bowl.  Add water and knead to form a soft small ball.  (More water may be needed to get a good workable consistency.)

Divide the dough into 16 pieces and make balls.  Line the press with plastic wrap and press the dough balls one at a time.  Press firmly to make thin tortillas.

Place tortillas one at a time on a lightly oiled skillet and cook each side for about 2 minutes.

Makes 16 tortillas.  Takes about 30 minutes.

It was so easy and so economical!  It costs at least $2/bag for 10-20 tortillas depending on the size, quality, and the store.  I've made 3 batches of tortillas have well over half the bag of masa left.  Plus I know exactly what is in each tortilla, no extra yucky stuff, which makes them healthier for my family.  After the first try, I made a double batch after dinner that night to have plenty in the fridge to last us for a while.  These could so easily be frozen too.  Jonathan has been eating them for lunches wrapped around a hot dog.  It tastes almost like a traditional corn dog, but healthier.  I found Tilapia at Walmart for about $3/lb, so we've had fish tacos for dinner several times this month.  I'll share that recipe tomorrow.  One night, I cut some into triangles and fried them for chips and those were great too.
