5-Days-of-Keeping-Your-Kids-in-the-Word

It's day 2 of the Keeping Your Kids in the Word series! You can see all of the posts in the series here. Today, I want to introduce you to the Child Training Bible. We first learned about the Child Training Bible a little over a year ago. I was given a Child Training Bible chart set at the 2:1 Conference to review and it was a big hit in our house. See our full review from last summer.

What is the Child Training Bible?

Child Training Bible

The Child Training Bible is a chart set that guides you through marking up a Bible. The idea behind it it to highlight the types of behaviors, ideas, and mindsets that we are to “put off” and those that we are instead to put on based on Colossians 3:9-10.

Any Bible can be used to make a Child Training Bible, but a Bible that is at least 6 x 9 inches is best because the tab key chart is meant to be kept in the front of the Bible. You use highlighter or colored pencils to mark the list of verses for each topic and mark that page in the appropriate location with a colored flag. It took me a couple of hours to make Jonathan's Child Training Bible, but it was time well spent in the Word for me as the parent. I found it a lot of fun to create.

Our Thoughts on the Child Training Bible

Child-Training-Bible-Open

Jonathan has been using his Child Training Bible for over a year now. I used Josh's old NIV Study Bible and colored pencils when I made his. He thinks it is really cool that he has a big Bible and that it used to be Daddy's Bible. It usually lives in or near his bed where he can grab it and read it at night if he wants before he goes to sleep. His more structured use of his Child Training Bible is in the mornings before school.

One of the draws for Jonathan are the colors. Having verses colored and all the colored tabs are exciting for him. He loves it when he comes across a highlighted verse as he is reading.

I love that we have an easy to use resource when tough situations arise. We had a situation last summer with some boys who were not being good friends. After that incident, we were able to sit down with Jonathan and his Child Training Bible and see what the Bible had to say on topics like quarreling and lying. The verses we needed were right at our finger tips.

The Child Training Bible would be especially helpful for parents who are less familiar with the Bible because they became Christ-followers later in life, but it's a valuable resource for any parent to have on hand.

Ways to Use the Child Training Bible

Here are some ways that you could you use the Child Training Bible with your kids:

  • Use the subject tabs when facing a particular situation.
  • Go through the Bible by subject.
  • Memorize the highlighted verses.
  • Use the highlighted verses for copywork.
  • Point out the important topical verses while reading through each book.
  • And much more!
